THE CULPRIT BEHIND YOUR LEAKY FAUCET OR FIXTURE

  • Many faucet drips and leaks are caused by poor seals. In this case, the fixture can often be repaired with a new O ring. The O ring is a small disc attached to the screw holding the handle to a faucet in place. When an O ring begins wearing out due to everyday use, you might begin to notice a small leak at the base of the handle where it meets the rest of the fixture. Some fixtures are more prone to this than others.
  • Similarly, washers that are worn out are another common cause behind leaks and drips. With every single use, friction is built up on the washer in a faucet. As the rubber washer wears down over time, it can cause your faucet to drip from the spout, even when all of the handles are turned off. Additionally, it is crucial that the washer installed is the proper size for the fixture at hand. A washer that is even only slightly too small will cause your fixture to leak.
  • In areas where water is exposed to sediments (homes with hard water are especially susceptible to this), valve seats can become corroded. A valve seat is a mechanism that connects the faucet and the spout, acting as a compression device. As corrosion builds up, those residues will force small gaps between the washer and valve seat, leaving your faucet with a leaky spout. While some corrosion is inevitable, homeowners, with the help of a professional plumber, should clean the valve seat regularly to prevent leakage.
  • Damaged or broken plumbing is a less likely but still possible cause. Pipes, especially copper pipes and underground pipes, can develop cracks and fractures. If you are aware of damaged plumbing, contact a professional plumber immediately.
